| Two Cent Bridge deck - Waterville, Maine |
In the city of Waterville, Maine, there is a beautiful old suspension bridge spanning the Kennebec River. This bridge was built in 1903 so that workers could access the Hollingsworth and Whitney company paper mill. A toll "not exceeding 2 cents" was provided for by the Maine Legislature in 1899 in order to pay for maintenance and upkeep of the bridge. This toll was in place until 1960 when the bridge was turned over to the city of Waterville. The bridge has a 400 foot main span and the bridge deck is 6 feet wide. The bridge was listed to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and is well worth a visit if you ever find yourself in Waterville, Maine.
