DELAWARE - The Lightship "Overfalls" - Lewes, Delaware
| Lightship "Overfalls" - Lewes, Delaware |
In the town of Lewes, Delaware there is a very interesting feature and that is the lightship "Overfalls". Over 132 years the USLHS (US Lighthouse Service) built and operated 179 lightships at varioius points along the ocean and great lakes coasts of the country to protect shipping from shoals, reefs and dangerous inlets. The lightship Overfalls is one of only a few remaining lightships that are open to the public. The ship has been remarkably preserved in an attractive little park along the waterfront in Lewes. If you are ever on your way down to the Cape Henlopen / Cape May ferry, make sure you stop at Lewes and take a look at the lightship Overfalls.
