| British Grave on Ocracoke Island - Outer Banks, North Carolina |
Not many people know this but back in 1942 during the early days of World War II, the armed British trawler HMS
Bedfordshire was on loan to the U.S. Navy to help guard the shoreline of the United States during the early days of World War II. On 11 May 1942, the HMS
Bedfordshire received a direct hit by a torpedo fired from a German U-boat just off the coast of the Outer Banks of North Carolina and all hands were lost. Only 4 bodies were recovered and they now lie in a beautiful little cemetery on Ocracoke Island. This cemetery is maintained by the British Government and is the final resting place for the 4 recovered bodies of the British sailors. So many American Tales & Trails. They are behind every corner and many of them are not at all what you would expect. I give thanks and pay tribute to these British Sailors who gave their lives in the defense of our Country so long ago. RIP Sailors.
